School Safety Training Opportunities

The Office of School Safety offers training in Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management. This course is designed to provide school administrators, school mental health professionals, security personnel and law enforcement with an understanding of why threat assessment is an important part of violence prevention in schools. Topics include the following: how threat assessment fits in the framework of comprehensive school safety, overview of research and findings related to threat assessment, investigative themes and core concepts of threat assessment, key aspects for creating school-based threat assessment teams and process, how to determine the appropriate response to concerning behavior, and potential strategies for threat management. Training will involve lecture, discussion, and tabletop scenarios. This training is free of cost. For registration links, see the In-Person Training Event Calendar below.

OSS has trained 12 regional Critical Incendent Response Teams in Wisconsin that align with the 12 CESA regions. The teams are comprised of multidisciplinary volunteers trained in crisis response and intervention. At the conclusion of training, participants are asked to sign the CIRT Agreement to establish a mutual understanding between OSS and individual CIRT members. The purpose of the training is to provide CIRT members the right sized, solutions-oriented approach to crisis response and recovery techniques that “do no harm” and the ability to supplement the resources and support networks that are already in place in our schools.

The goal of this self-paced course is to educate the public on threatening or potentially concerning behaviors and where to report them. The entire course will take 75 minutes to complete.

School lockdowns and safety drills are important components of safety planning. In this 75-minute recorded webinar, OSS Director Trish Kilpin provides guidance on factors school administrators and staff must take into account when planning for and conducting drills. Unique considerations within the school environment, including protecting both physical and psychological safety, are discussed.

In this course, the Office of School Safety (OSS) will present a model of comprehensive school safety and introduce SRP and SRM. These procedures are practical, action based, responses given to any situation within a school community. The six specific actions performed after an incident include Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, and Reunify. The SRM is utilized to reunite students with parents and guardians after an emergency or crisis. This training is free of cost.
